Mother & Son

A Highlands Theatre Group production based on the beloved Australian television series Mother and Son, which starred Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald. Written by Geoffrey Atherden, the show’s original premise was simple, but allowed for tremendous comic scope. A newly – divorced man moves back home to care for his aging, scatterbrained  parent. Though the long – widowed woman appears to be losing her memory, she manipulates this condition to clever advantage. More often than not, the son’s plans to escape or enjoy some time alone are frustrated and trumped by her constant scheming.  On top of which, his caddish older brother tricks their mother into believing that he is the family’s golden boy instead.

Mother And Son follows Arthur, who is at his wits end and is desperate for some time away with his new girlfriend, Anita. But he doesn't have anyone who would look after his mother, Maggie, who he has already sacrificed so much for. Vague but vicious and more arsenic than old lace, Maggie would have Arthur in the pocket of her apron for life – if she could just remember where she put the apron. Arthur's older, philandering dentist brother, Robert and his wife Liz claim they would love to help, however Liz has bigger fish to fry. Is Robert having an affair with his hygienist? Will Arthur finally get away to pop the question? Will Maggie go on a trip of her own?
